Deep in the woods near Cherrygrove City, a boy was preparing to make his first catch. He threw the ball which he had purchased with the last of his well saved money and ... waited. The sphere hit the sleeping mouse-like creature that he had stealthily approached and it was enveloped in red light. It closed and dropped to the ground. Rayn, the boy, watched it bounce and shake for the three longest seconds in his life. Finally, the red light in the center of the ball dimmed and the ball returned to his waiting hand.
"Yes!" screamed Rayn. His first thought was to jump for joy but then ...
Ooops, He thought, reallizing that he had just effectively scared away all the wild Pokemon in the area. Oh well, at least I got one.
"I guess should see what I got. Umm ... how do I do it again?" he spoke to himself. "Oh yeah, Pokeball, go!"
He depressed the button in the center of his Pokeball to release his newly catched Pokemon. It landed on the ground startled. It looked at Rayn and made an annoyed rumble of a sound from deep in its throat.
Hey that's ... that's a Pikachu! What the heck is it doing around here? Well ... at least it's a friendly guy.
"Hey, hi there buddy!" He said to the Pikachu "How ya - " The Pikachu snarled again. "Look, I'm sorry about that. I'm your new trainer, 'kay?" Rayn uttered his few chosen words. The Pikachu understood and nuzzled against Rayn's leg.
"Let's go find you something to fight against ... Pika ..?"
Yeah, thought Rayn, that's a fitting name for a Pikachu, And at the same time, He's got a name! Now he's really mine. Mine!
Pika understood and "Pika'd" his consent. Not a minute later they found a Pidgey slowly moving along.
Phew, something easy.
"Kay, Pika, this should be easy. Just pound it with Thundershock. Got it?" Pika replied with a serious sounding "Chu" and a slight nod. Rayn couldn't help but laugh.
"Just go for it buddy," he said. By this time the Pidgey had seen them and started preparing for a battle. "Quick, Pikachu, Thundershock now!" Zap! A bolt of electricity left Pikachu's body and fried his flying adversary.
"Good work!" Rayn rubbed Pikachu's back. The rest of the day was spent zapping Pidgey, Bellsprout, Weedle, and whatever that was else fool enough to get in their way. By the end of the day
Hmm, funny, not many of those Pokemon gave fight. Seems like we approached them too quietly. Rayn pondered Pika's, and his own, abilities in the field of stealth on way home. He looked at his Pokegear, a large watch capable of many different features, to check the direction. He had been given a map card by an old man when he had first come to the city. He realized he was going the wrong way and promptly turned around and walked back toward a clearing.
"Hey, you!" Rayn jumped at the sudden voice and turned to confront the speaker standing across the clearing. It was a boy, who looked to be about thirteen, the same age as Rayn. He was wearing a gold shirt, and khakis, a sharp contrast to Rayn's silver-on-black. And judging by the Pokeball on his belt, he was a Pokemon trainer.
"You talkin' to me?" Rayn responded.
"Yeah. You're a Pokemon trainer, right? I take it that that mouse-thing by your leg is an excuse for a Pokemon?" Pikachu snarled and tensed for a battle.
"This is Pika. You wanna make something of it?" Rayn reponded cooly.
"Let's battle!"
"You're on! Pika, go!" Darker jumped into the clearing and prepared to fight.
"Totodile, go!"
Everything went into slow-motion as Rayn's brain started to analyze the situation. Totodile ... easy battle, just slam it with T-Shock
"Pika, just slam it with electricity! Thundershock, now!"
Pika held its ground as the enemy Totodile flew towards him, preparing to unleash its devistating "Scratch" technique. When it got close enough Pika unleashed a its own technique. A blast of electricity pervaded the Totodile's body, renendering it immediately unconcious.
"Oh man! Totodile, return!" the Pokemon was enveloped in red light and returned to its Pokeball. "You were lucky this time. Next time, I'll get you!" He turned his tail and walked away.
Rayn pondered this for a second and then winked at Pika. It replied with a "Pika". They turned away from the battle ground, and walked towards, what was for now, home.

Rayn and Pika walked into town. He immediately headed for the unofficial gym that was next to the Pokemon Center. Rayn ran through the open doors into the stadium inside.
"Wow! Rayn, you got yourself a Pokemon," said a boy slightly older than Rayn, looking at Pika.
"I'm glad to see you too, Jaise."
Why don't you go to the Pokemon Center. Get your Pikachu healed up."
"His name's Pika."
"Okay, okay, don't be so testy. Just go heal up - he looks beat. Did you happen to battle someone?"
"Yeah, I took on this guy wearing a funny looking gold shirt. You know him?"
"No ... but he sounds familiar. I'll think about it while you go heal your Pokemon!" He replied, putting emphasis on the last part of the statement.
"Okay, okay! Come on Pika." Pika yelped and followed Rayn outside. After checking up at the center, he went back into the gym and challenged Jaise to a match.
"Sure," was the confident reply. The people training in the gym turned to watch the battle in the center of the stadium area.
Rayn's brain suddenly started working overtime once again. Okay, it'll take him three-point-five seconds to throw his Pokeball containing Beedrill. One second to give a command. Another two seconds to use Twineedle. That gives me five point five seconds to toy around with.
And on top of that, Pika's out of a Pokeball, and he has the upper-hand wen it
comes to speed.
Buh-bye Beedrill, he thought, preparing his battle plans in his head. Hold on a sec ... how the hell did I know all that? He shook off the strange feeling and whispered his commands to Pika, suddenly noting that his entire chain of thought could not have taken more that one or two seconds.
"Beedrill go!"
From there, everything fell into position.
